Even in the ancient times Australian aborigines have been using tea tree oil to cure a huge range of ailments but due to the mother manufacture of synthetic drugs, people have temporarily forgotten about the benefits of tea tree oil[i]. However, many people are now concerned about using products with their contain chemicals and have slowly been turning back to natural remedies such as using tea tree oil and other essential oils. It is not surprising then to discover that many hair care products are now using tea tree oil to combat various hair and scalp problems, and to jump on the bandwagon. Tea tree oil is said to get rid of dandruff and lice. Opting for tea tree oil scalp care can also kill fungus and stubborn lice. This is the reason why both medicated and regular shampoos have tea tree oil contained in them.

Using tea tree oil for scalp problems is easy. Just remember to dilute the oil in either carrier oils or other substance, such as your regular shampoo conditioner, because it can cause irritation when used undiluted. When shampooing, you only need to add 2 drops of tea tree to small amounts of shampoo. Massage the mixture onto your scalp and leave on for 5 to 7 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and repeat steps if necessary. [ii]

Scalp ringworm can also be treated using tea tree oil. This scalp problem often affects children and this is caused by fungal micro-organisms. When these micro-organisms infect scalp tissue, they can form crusty and flaky patches. Tea tree oil has antifungal properties that can kill the fungus that causes scalp ringworm. The oil is also capable of eliminating head lice in children and even adults. It also has the ability to repel these pesky parasites which can make your clothes and furniture their new breeding ground. Add 10 to 20 drops of tea tree oil to 1 oz shampoo and massage it into your hair and leave on for 10 minutes. The mixture will both kill the lice and eggs.

Cradle cap is also a common problem in small children. It is characterized by flaky, crusty skin on the scalp of the baby. You can get rid of this scalp problem using tea tree oil mixed with almond oil. Massage the oil into the scalp of the baby for a few minutes and rinse off using tea tree shampoo. [iii]

For healthy and problem free scalp, tea tree oil scalp care is recommended. It is less harsh than some hair care products with chemicals and its medicinal properties prevent scalp dryness and irritation. Just remember to follow the right dosage instructions and only use the oil externally.
